The Ten-cent Prexie

Airmail to Cuba

The airmail rate to Cuba was ten cents per half ounce from December 1, 1932 through June 28, 1945, and then again from August 1, 1954 through June 30, 1961.

This Christmas letter to Cuba was mailed during the secont ten-cent period, but the recipient had moved to the Philippines. Apparently it was returned to sender, as there is a handwritten note on the back saying "This has been returned twice. I'm determined to send it even if it doesn't arrive til Christmas 1959 - love."

The letter was sent from Alaska in mid-December 1958. Alaska was still a territory then, for another two weeks. The Liberty ten-cent stamp had been issued a year and a half before, but there were deliveries of the ten-cent Prexie into 1958.
