The Ten-cent Prexie

Multiple rates

The domestic air mail rate was five cents from October 1, 1946 to January 1, 1949.

This double-weight free-frank official envelope was sent airmail, so it required regular postage. Double the rate in 1947 would have been ten cents.

The rate to Canada was the same as domestic during the five-cent airmail rate period. This double-weight cover was sent airmail from an APO address in Austria to Canada in 1948.

The business reply mail service charges first class postage plus a handling fee for each piece of mail returned to sender in reply. Typically, payment is shown by placing postage due stamps for the total amount on the top envelope in a stack of returns. Occasionally a postage stamp or stamps will be used to pay the charges. This envelope was the top one of two, and the solo ten-cent Prexie is evidence of payment of eight cents postage plus two cents handling fee.
