The Twelve-cent Prexie

Four times first class

This cover was sent at four times the first class rate of three cents in 1939.

A shipping tag for an item weighing between three and four ounces, sent first class.

First class business reply mail cost three cents postage plus one cent fee from the beginning of the Prexie period until July 1, 1957. The twelve-cent stamp on this envelope pays the postage and charges for three items. The envelope specifies that four cents postage will be paid by the recipient, but that is not technically accurate - one cent of that is the business reply fee. Postage was only three cents in 1947.
