The Fifteen-cent Prexie

Hawaii airmail usage

The rate for airmail letters between Hawaii and the continental United States was fifteen cents from January 15, 1945 to October 1, 1946.

Considering the short time this rate was in effect, it is not extraordinarily difficult to find covers mailed from or to Hawaii for fifteen cents. This example was mailed from Kapaa in June of 1945.

Airmail from Hawaii to Alaska cost the same as airmail to the States.

A cover mailed from APO 57 (Germany) to Hawaii in September of 1946. Service personnel stationed abroad could use the same rates as if they were in the continental US.

This card was mailed to Honolulu December 18, 1941 and bears a San Francisco civil censor marking. There is no indication as to when it was received. The interesting thing about it is that it was successfully mailed for fifteen cents when the proper airmail postage to Hawaii was twenty cents.
