Tattered as it is, this check is one of the most unusual known from the late 1860's or early 1870's. The overall design on the front is extraordinary, and the text is printed in a silvery ink. The imprinted revenue would be out of place on the front of it.

Another copy is known, Number 3 from the account, but it is severely trimmed to remove the ragged edges.

Since this check is so plain, it is difficult to see why the revenue would be printed on the back of it. A portion of another imprint can be seen at the bottom of the back as well, which could indicate that the placement of the revenue was an error instead of an intentional choice.
